Deputies chase Sarasota man accused of stealing truck

Just before 5 p.m. Saturday, deputies were called to a Lowe's, 5730 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, to a report of an armed carjacking, according to an arrest report.

According to the sheriff's office, a man was in the parking lot of Lowes loading mulch into the trunk of his 2017 Chrysler 300 when the suspect, 31-year-old Thomas White, got into the auto and started driving away.

- A Sarasota man is facing charges after stealing a vehicle with a child in the backseat, deputies announced Monday morning. As the victim was loading mulch into his vehicle, deputies say White jumped in the front seat and drove away with his daughter. The girl says White then got aggravated and yelled at her to get out of the auto as he started to drive away.

Following a police chase, White was captured and taken into custody.

Pursuing deputies spotted the truck around Cattlemen and Bee Ridge roads and tried to stop him.

During an interview with detectives, White admitted to stealing the Santa Fe.

White was released from prison in October 2016 after serving almost three years of a 4-year sentence for five counts of trafficking in stolen property, five counts of providing false ownership to pawn broker, one count of burglary and one count of grand theft. He last was released from prison in October 2016 after being sentenced to more than 10 felony charges.

White was arrested on several charges including resisting an officer, kidnapping and carjacking.
