Conchita Wurst forced to reveal that she's HIV carrier

Conchita Wurst has revealed she is HIV positive in a public statement to fans.

The 29-year-old singer and drag performer made the announcement in an Instagram post.

'Coming out is better than being outed by a third party'.

"I won't give anyone the right to scare me and to influence my life in this way, ' said Wurst, describing the decision to go public as removing a 'sword of Damocles".

Wurst, real name Thomas Neuwirth, also explained that her treatment had suppressed the virus so that it could no longer be detected in her blood - and that she was no longer at risk of transmitting the virus.

Born Tom Neuwirth in Styria, Austria, Conchita became an global sensation when she won Eurovision in with Rise Like A Phoenix.

She stated within the publish in her native German: "I've been hiv-positive for a few years. that is really irrelevant to the general public, however an ex-boyfriend threatens me to go public with this non-public info, and I can't give anybody the precise to frighten me and affect my life sooner or later".

"I hope to show courage and take another step against the stigmatization of people with H.I.V.", he added.

Ian Green, the chief executive of AIDS charity The Terrence Higgins Trust, said it was a shame that she'd been forced to go public after an ex-partner has threatened her.

'Threatening to reveal someone's HIV status, under any circumstances, is entirely wrong. What other health condition would be used as blackmail against someone?

The information about my situation may be new to you but to me it is not. And we all know this is not one thing which exclusively occurs to these within the public eye. It was broadcast on BBC Radio 2's Friday Night Is Music Night.
