Antonio Rudiger was axed from Chelsea's squad to face Southampton as punishment for publicly questioning supervisor Antonio Conte's methods.

Blues boss Antonio Conte confirmed after the game at St Mary's that it was "a tactical decision" to drop the Germany defender, who has subsequently confirmed he is fully fit.

A week before, Rudiger slammed his Chelsea teammates and questioned the team's tactics after the frustrating 1-1 draw at home to West Ham.

Rudiger said he had not intended it to be that but added that it was the likeliest explanation for his demotion from the team.

Asked why he was not in the squad, he said: "I have no idea". But I didn't mean it that way.

"It was a fact, it wasn't about the tactics".

"In the second half we showed great character, great determination and desire to win the game".

Chelsea fought back from two goals down to beat Southampton 3-2, but it is likely to be too late to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League. "This was a little break".

It seemed as if Chelsea's poor season was about to slump to even lower depths with just 20 minutes left of their Premier League fixture away to Southampton yesterday.

"I don't know why the desire wasn't there but the coach is the first person to have the fault". And he's a very, very good coach'.

Rudiger is not the first player at Chelsea to feel the brunt of Conte's fury, with David Luiz and Diego Costa both involved in public fallouts with the former Italy manager.

"Not winning it would not be worthy of Chelsea", he said.

'I think it would be a good reconciliation [with the supporters] with the FA Cup'.
