Although the City players were adamant that the fan hostility had no effect on their performance, manager, Pep Guardiola expressed surprise at the reception, admitting that he "did not expect that from the Liverpool side".

Meanwhile, Guardiola's sensational claims that Paul Pogba was offered to City in the January transfer window by agent Mino Raiola has not deterred Jose Mourinho from starting the France midfielder.

But onwards and upwards as they say and what better way to bounce back than by winning the league against that lot from Stretford.

"We have to accept it and now we have [Manchester] United at home and then Liverpool at home".

Park the bus will ring loud and true but City must get through a stubborn backline and top goalkeeper if they want to win this one.

The return leg of the two teams will take place at the Etihad stadium on April 10.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have apologised to City for the attack on their bus, saying in a statement, "We apologise unreservedly to Pep Guardiola, his players, staff and officials caught up in the incident".

"Contratulations to United. Now we will try, if we are fearless enough, to stand up again and focus on Tuesday", said City manager Pep Guardiola.

Kevin De Bruyne, City's leading candidate for player of the year awards, was left on the bench alongside strikers Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero.

It will hopefully be a blue moon on Saturday evening.

Losing to United would upset fans, but is unlikely to be detrimental to City's season. It was the first time he had played an away knockout tie in the Champions League.

Second half they arrive twice and score two goals. We did everything in the first half, we played with courage and created so many chances.

"Trent (Alexander-Arnold) had an outstanding game, Robbo (Andy Robertson) on the other side, both centre-halves very good game, our three midfielders were absolutely brilliant, our three offensive guys were in the right spaces and supported them".

"This game doesn't come in an ideal situation, for there's quite a gap of points between the two of us, but we all know that it's a special game", said Mata. "That's what our fans deserve".
