Criminal opens fire on UP Police with Ak-47, shot dead

The Anti-Terrorist Squad, ATS of the Uttar Pradesh police has arrested ten persons, who it claimed were linked with Lashker-e-Taiba and allegedly involved in terror-funding activities.

Criminals, wanted for various crimes in Noida, Ghaziabad, Saharanpur, and Muzzafarnagar, were tracked down in an operation launched by UP police on Saturday night.

Six policemen were also injured in the encounters, he told reporters here. Police said he died while he was being taken to hospital. During the encounter, one of our personnel also got injured & is being treated in a hospital.

In Saharanpur, a notorious gangster, Salim, was killed in a shootout in which Sub-Inspector Sachin Sharma of Mandi police station was also hurt, Saharanpur Senior Superintendent of Police Bablu Kumar said.

A police officer said, "As the police asked to stop a Maruti Swift Dzire, Shravan and his companion shot the police with AK-47 and an automatic rifle, after which his companion managed to escape".

The slain criminal was identified as Salim, Bablu Kumar said.

An AK-47 was recovered in the Noida encounter.

This takes the death toll of criminals allegedly killed in police encounters to 45 since March 20 previous year. On Sunday Morning, UP police gunned down a criminal in exchange of fire with security officials in Noida.

The police have seized Rs 1 Lakh, a motorcycle and a pistol from the spot. There was a bounty of Rs 50,000 each from Noida and Delhi Police on him.

As reports of encounters poured in, UP DGP O P Singh said wrong-doers would not be spared and the long arm of the law will catch up with them. He also said there were no fake encounters.

In another incident, at Vijay Nagar police station area of Ghaziabad, a local history sheeter, carrying a reward of Rs 25,000, was arrested after an encounter with the police, Ghaziabad SSP Vaibhav Krishna said. Also, the Vijaynagar Police nabbed an accused wanted in a murder case from his hideout.

SSP Krishna said the encounter took place around 8.15 pm near Akbarpur Bahrampur on NH-24.

In Saharanpur, police shot dead Ahsan, a resident of Shamli who carried a bounty of ₹25,000, after police teams intercepted his bike near Chilkana Road.

In Ghaziabad, police said they shot at a wanted man, Rahul, after a brief chase.
