"It's completely different. I remember the first time I walked into an England squad, I went for dinner the first time and there was [Wayne] Rooney, [Frank] Lampard, [Steven] Gerrard, [Rio] Ferdinand, [John] Terry - big players who I had watched growing up", said Wilshere.

England's U20 and U17 sides won their respective World Cups a year ago and although he sees cause for optimism, Wilshere is keen not to raise expectations too high for the next generation.

Zelalem made 28 appearances on loan at Scottish side Rangers back in 201516, and appeared nine times for Eredivisie side VVV Venlo past year.

England's John Stones, Jordan Henderson, Lewis Cook, Danny Welbeck, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Raheem Sterling and Eric Dier during training at St. George's Park, Burton Upon Trent. It did make me think because he had said I could fight for my position. "And with this group of players, it wouldn't be fair".

"Things have changed since then", replied Wilshere when asked about Wenger's comments.

"But it is down to the manager of Arsenal for picking me, so I am thankful for that".

Updating fans about his recovery on the social networking site, Zelalem wrote: "After a setback in January, I will now be back playing in pre season".

Wilshere's future is again up in the air.

Wilshere has yet to commit to a new Arsenal contract, so he could go to the World Cup and become a free agent on July 1 before he returns to the UK.

And he is hoping to have a deal agreed before jetting off to Russian Federation. "Ideally from my point of view and the club's point of view, they will probably want it sorted".

These two loan spells, coupled with the four appearances he has made for Arsenal's first team, leave the 21-year-old highly inexperienced when compared to some of the competition he faces for a spot in Wenger's side.

Wilshere was last included in an England squad in November 2016, when he was on the bench for games against Scotland and Spain.

"How I felt after?" It is the top level for any player.
