In a message on Chinese Twitter-like website Sina Weibo, Prime Minister Modi said, "congratulations on your re-election as chairman of the People's Republic of China", as the post of president is referred to in China.

There has also been pushback against Mr Xi's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to build infrastructure along trade routes linking China to Europe, with countries like Germany regarding it as way for China to practise new imperialism, noted Professor Zheng Yongnian, director of the East Asian Institute.

Chinese President Xi Jinping talks to leaders after being formally re-elected to a second term as China's President during a plenary session of China's National People's Congress at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Saturday, March 17.

More of the same: Yi's appointment to central bank chief appears to be vote for continuity in PBOC policies under Zhou, his predecessor and mentor. As part of that government reshuffle, new top-level officials have been announced.
