In a message on Chinese Twitter-like website Sina Weibo, Prime Minister Modi said, "congratulations on your re-election as chairman of the People's Republic of China", as the post of president is referred to in China.

There has also been pushback against Mr Xi's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to build infrastructure along trade routes linking China to Europe, with countries like Germany regarding it as way for China to practise new imperialism, noted Professor Zheng Yongnian, director of the East Asian Institute.

Chinese President Xi Jinping talks to leaders after being formally re-elected to a second term as China's President during a plenary session of China's National People's Congress at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Saturday, March 17.

Xi took office as president in 2013 and hasn't said how many additional five-year terms he intends to serve.

Yameen said he is confident that under Xi's leadership, China will make greater achievements and create more opportunities for other countries to achieve common development. The legislature scrapped term limits for the president and vice president last week.

Only one delegate opposed Mr. Wang as Vice President - the face and mastermind of President Xi's anti-corruption campaign.

Last Wednesday, Mr Wang Yang was also unanimously elected chairman of the top political advisory body, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

The reforms also include setting up a new immigration agency, as well as a merger of China's banking and insurance regulators under a China banking and insurance regulatory commission.

The Central Committee says that this change is necessary because "the leadership of the Communist Party of China is the defining feature of socialism with Chinese characteristics".

More of the same: Yi's appointment to central bank chief appears to be vote for continuity in PBOC policies under Zhou, his predecessor and mentor. As part of that government reshuffle, new top-level officials have been announced.
