Cristiano Ronaldo's troubled first half to this season looked a thing from the distant past as he clinched the 50th hat-trick of his career in Real Madrid's 6-3 win over Girona yesterday morning (Singapore time).

Since the bet was said to have been made, Ronaldo has scored 21 goals in Spain's top flight, while Messi has notched 13 over the same period.

A dominant start from Barca at Nou Camp yielded the opening goal after just eight minutes as Messi found Jordi Alba out on the left, his pullback neatly side-footed into the far corner by Paco Alcacer, filling in for the suspended Luis Suarez.

The Frenchman is under severe pressure at the Bernabeu given the champions' league position, and they are unlikely to catch Barcelona with just 10 games to play.

As January came to an end, the Portuguese superstar bagged back-to-back La Liga braces in wins over Deportivo and Valencia.

Messi scored twice against Madrid this season - in a 3-1 loss in the Spanish Super Cup final at the beginning of the season and in a 3-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in a league match late past year.

Although his performances wavered at the beginning of the current season, Ronaldo has scored in the last eight games for Zinedine Zidane's side across all competitions.

Barça's Lionel Messi sits atop that individual list on 25 goals, but this is now only three more than his eternal Madrid rival.

In total, Ronaldo has scored 566 club goals.

Messi has scored at least once in his last six matches in all competitions.

"Cristiano is playing at a spectacular level and it shows every day. I'm not happy with the three goals conceded and that has to be improved, we have to work on it", added Zidane. "Everyone benefits from it".

The reigning Ballon d'Or holder's post, after translation, reads as: "Don't try to erase the attractive moment I'm living with fake news!"

Last year, a state prosecutor accused Ronaldo of four counts of tax fraud from 2011-14 worth 14.7 million euros ($18 million).
