Jose Mourinho says Manchester United lack 'football heritage' in 12-minute rant

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho issued a 12-minute rant defending his record with the club by insinuating he inherited a squad with "no heritage" of European success. Should Jose Mourinho wave goodbye to Manchester United?

Keane added on the Red Devils' collective woes: "When I played for United I always thought when you put on the jersey you felt great, enjoyed the history, the pressure, the badge and expectation from supporters".

"And they have to survive and when they survive, they become stronger".

"You know, easy life, and the fans not upset and no critics, that's not good. That's not good, because if you want to make a real top team with top mentality they need to grow up".

As I said before the game, I did not expect United to win the Champions League because there are four or five teams better than them - but I definitely thought they would get past Sevilla. "I'm happy we were on exactly the same page", said Mourinho. "In Sevilla, there are many players who would play in my team".

And, tellingly, in his analysis of his players' performances this season, only Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic were spared their manager's thinly-veiled criticism.

Giving his assessment, winger Lingard said on "They (Brighton) sat back and hit us on the counter-attack a few times, which we were obviously aware of before the match, but we knew we needed to win and we got the win, which was the most important thing". No chance. You can not change and I will not change'.

"We went out to a side that's more successful than Manchester United in [the] last seven years in Europe".

He said: "You can not expect me to say 'this and that player, they have to do better'". When you see him interviewed after the game, I don't think he was shocked because he's working with the players every day.

"He told me "Because I did a fantastic job in another club and I know that I have a huge job to do so I have a challenge". They were out-shot, out-possessed, and quite frankly outclassed by Sevilla over these two legs. We are knocked out to a team that is brilliant in their approach for many years, with their scouting system, the way they invest with every Euro.

During the embargoed section of his press briefing, though, Mourinho had some choice words for a squad that flopped in Europe and find themselves 16 points adrift of rivals Manchester City in the Premier League. "Be happy with others happiness even if they are your enemies".

"To develop a process is one thing, to go for the jugular is another thing".

"If the clubs that are in a better situation than us stop investing and we invest, we are side to side". In terms of league points, they are much better off than they were a year ago. It's as simple as that.

"But there is something that I used to call football heritage - I try to translate from my Portuguese, which is nearly flawless to my English that is far from ideal". I used to call people with a lot of ideas idealists or idiots.
