Daily Dose of Viagra May Reduce Colon Cancer Risk

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, spotlighting the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths, with American Cancer Society officials estimating 45 hundred new cases this year in MI, with almost 17 hundred deaths due to the disease. "However, colon cancer awareness needs to be much broader than just among physicians if we are going to be successful in increasing the number of people being checked for the disease".

The American Cancer Society estimates there will be 4,510 new cases of colorectal cancer and 1,670 deaths due to the disease in MI this year. However, the disease is highly treatable if caught early.

One of the more preventable and curable types of cancer is one that many people shun from getting screened for. Results of a USA study, which was led by researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, were published in the January 18 issue of JAMA Oncology. "None of my close family had colon cancer, however I had an uncle and a cousin who had both been determined to have colon cancer at their more youthful ages".

"We have known for many years that there is a clear link between obesity and digestive health", said Sirisha Jasti, M.D., a gastroenterologist with Tennova Gastroenterology.

Researchers examined more than two decades of survey data to obtain information about the dietary patterns of more than 120,000 men and women. Check with your health plan to find out the details of what colorectal cancer screening is covered. On the other hand, green leafy and dark yellow vegetables, whole grains, coffee and fruit juice appeared to reduce inflammation. But colon cancer can be detected - and prevented - by a colonoscopy. If achieved, the screening goal of "80 percent by 2018" would prevent 277,000 cases of colorectal cancer, and 203,000 associated deaths by 2030.

"Basically, what makes for a healthy diet overall also has the potential to promote a cancer-free colon", Dr. Jasti said.

A small, daily dose of Viagra significantly reduces colorectal cancer risk in an animal model that is genetically predetermined to have the third leading cause of cancer death, scientists report.

While the vast majority of new cases occur at age 50 and over, the disease does not discriminate and can happen to men and women at any age. Early detection is important because treatments are more likely to be successful for early- rather than late-stage cancer.
