The first act of aggression took place 15 minutes after the kickoff near the entrance to San Mames Stadium - Athletic Bilbao's home ground - after one of the guards had shouted at some Marseille fans.

Basurto University Hospital, where the injured were taken, issued a medical update saying that a 57-year-old guard had been wounded in the neck and head by a sharp object but was not in serious condition.

Thursday's incident comes less than a month after a police officer died of a heart attack in Bilbao on February 22 during fan violence involving Spartak Moscow. "I wish a prompt recovery to the two Athletic security guards".

Marseille, who won the tie 5-2 on aggregate, are now expecting to receive a fine for the fan outbursts by UEFA.

El Correo reported that officers confiscated knives, metal bars, golf balls and flares from a section of Marseille fans prior to the game. A total of 800 officers, including 200 from a private security firm hired by Athletic, were placed on duty.

A second member of the security personnel sustained minor hand injuries.

Five arrests were made as groups of Russian fans carrying weapons, clashed with home supporters, leading to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy condemning the action.

The unrest came as Marseille played against Athletic Bilbao in the return leg of the Europa League last-16.
