The first Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Canberra, the capital city of Australia, touched down at Canberra Airport earlier, where it was welcomed with a celebratory water cannon salute.

H.E. Akbar Al Baker, group CEO, Qatar Airways, noted, "Mykonos has always been one of our most sought-after European destinations, and we are very proud to be the first Gulf carrier to serve Mykonos directly".

"In 2016, we launched flights to Sydney and Adelaide, clearly demonstrating our commitment to the people of Australia".

With the airline launching a new daily service to Canberra, the airline flies to five destinations in Australia.

Qatar Airways passengers will now be able to enjoy their award-winning business class suite, Qsuite, on global flights going in and out of Canberra for the very first time.

Canberra Airport's Executive Chairman Terry Snow said: "We appreciate Qatar Airways' strong support for the nation's capital".

The service to Doha is not direct, however, with Canberra's runway deemed too short for Qatar Airways to operate long-haul outgoing flights. The Canberra service will also stop in Sydney, where passengers can disembark, creating a second daily flight into the popular destination.
