Atlanta United won its 2018 home opener on Sunday, defeating DC United by a final score of 3-1.

Atlanta United set the league single-game record of 71,874 against Toronto on October 22, 2017.

Josef Martinez tapped in a Hector Villalba pass to make it 1-0 for Atlanta in the 24th minute.

Miguel Almirón scored in the 73rd minute on a straight shot 18 yards out, with Julian Gressel credited with the assist.

New York City FC continued its flawless start to the MLS season, while Atlanta United also claimed a win Sunday. Almiron unleashed a powerful left-footed shot into the top left corner of the net, leaving no chance for goalkeeper David Ousted. NYCFC went 2-0 up in the 33rd minute as David Villa put away a simple finish for the hosts. Villa's cross, off a feed from Jesus Medina, deflected high off Michael Ciani and Tinnerholm, a 27-year-old defender from Sweden, rifled it off the crossbar.

United is 0-1-1 after the loss and has its first quasi-home match of the season Saturday against Houston Dynamo at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Prince George's County.
