Pop superstar Madonna on Tuesday announced that she will direct a biopic about Michaela DePrince, a war orphan from Sierra Leone who overcame overwhelming odds to become a successful ballerina.

The plot centers around Deprince, who spent her childhood as an orphan in war-torn Sierra Leone, only to be adopted and taken to the United States, where she later rose to prominence as a world-famous ballerina. It will be an adaptation based on the memoir by Camilla Blackett.

The star continued: 'We have a unique opportunity to shed light on Sierra Leone and let Michaela be the voice for all the orphaned children she grew up beside. "I am honored to bring her story to life", said Madonna.

Madonna made her feature directing debut on the 2008 British comedy Filth and Wisdom. Her work on the screen has been met with varying degrees of critical and commercial success.

DePrince was featured in the 2012 ballet documentary "First Position" and in 2016 she danced in Beyoncé's "Lemonade" visual album, an appearance that helped her gain even more attention.

And now Madonna is set to direct a new film about one incredible ballerina's life story. She also helmed and co-wrote 2011's W.E.

Madonna may be the highest-selling female recording artist of all time, but she has a questionable track record as a director.

Madonna, who founded nonprofit Raising Malawi in 2006, also produced and wrote the documentary I Am Because We Are, about Malawi's orphans and the AIDS crisis. "There is no director better suited to tell Michaela's journey with passion and sensitivity, and we can not wait to bring this film to audiences all around the world". Jonathan Glickman and Tabitha Shick will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.

Michaela DePrince was known as girl Number 27 at the orphanage, where she was abandoned at a young age and tormented as a "devil child" for a skin condition that makes her skin appear spotted.
