Asked about the interest from City, Fred told ESPN Brasil: "It existed, yes, and it still exists".

The news comes as a surprise after City had reportedly been in advanced negotiations to land the 24-year-old Brazil global, but Paul Hirst of The Times writes that the two clubs could not come to an agreement despite City loaning striker Larry Kayode to the Ukrainian giants.

Manchester City target Fred has his heart set on a summer move to the Etihad - or any other Premier League side.

Shakhtar Donetsk have confirmed that in-demand midfielder Fred will be heading to Manchester this summer, with City and United set for another transfer tussle.

Shakhtar are now leading the Ukrainian first division and take on Roma tonight in the Champions league, leading 2-1 on aggregate. Fred has been a stand out player for the Ukrainian champions in this season's Champions League as his goal gave Shakhtar a one-goal advantage against Roma in their last 16 first leg match in Donetsk.

However, the Shakhtar star made it very clear that he wasn't obsessed with the idea of playing for Pep Guardiola, revealing he would be "happy" to play for the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea or Arsenal if they came along.

Fred added: 'Guardiola did not talk to me, but there were people from City who talked to my agent. It is the best league in the world, I have no doubt, and I believe that my football would evolve. That would help a lot, learn by watching them.
