A section of the Mombasa Highway was Tuesday blocked following an accident involving a lorry ferrying liquefied petroleum gas and another one hauling a 40-feet container at Chyulu Hills, Makueni County, causing a fire from the leaking gas tank.

The truck ferrying LPG gas was heading to Nairobi from Mombasa while the other truck was transporting a 40-feet container towards Mombasa.

Police have secured the scene with only emergency service providers allowed at the scene and blocked both sides of the Higway as they struggle to contain the fire and ease traffic.

Traffic to and from Mombasa came to a halt and police advised motorists and other road users to avoid the scene.

The incident took place after an accident at 2am when the tanker was involved in an accident.

No casualties were immediately reported. Those traveling from Mombasa to Nairobi to divert at Voi and take Taveta- Loitoktok- Emali Road to Nairobi, " said the National Police Service.

Police stressed that efforts were being made to clear the scene and open up the road and urged the public using the road to expect delays and obey instructions from the officers diverting traffic.

The leak was attributed to malfunctioning of a lid on the tanker.
