No reason, either. The device would just start laughing maniacally. Why?

Customers disabling their Echo speakers to stop hearing nightmare-inducing laughs doesn't reflect well on Amazon, which is why the company has now announced that it's aware of the problem and is working on a fix.

Reports from around the world say that Alexa-powered smart speakers are spontaneously letting out evil laughs.

According to reports compiled by BuzzFeed, there are times when Alexa would suddenly laugh for no reason.

The ecommerce giant's virtual assistant has been heard laughing in a creepy, maniacal way without being prompted - and it became a trending moment on Twitter Wednesday.

Making matters worse is that the laughter Alexa uses is not the digital assistant's built-in recording. "It was really creepy".

- Amazon's Alexa apparently has been malfunctioning - and it's caused quite a shock. Unfortunately, Amazon's explanation does not provide an insight into the reasoning behind Alexa's laughter in a quiet room.

In a statement, Amazon said: "In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase 'Alexa, laugh'".

Amazon is also changing Alexa's response to that command: rather than have the assistant laugh right away, its cackling will be preceded by the sentence, "Sure, I can laugh".

However, looking at Amazon's plans, it is unclear if the solution will indeed put an end to the cases of Alexa randomly laughing.

Users began noticing this happening in their Amazon Echo devices a few weeks ago and immediately took to social media sites like Twitter to post videos.
