Huskers take fifth, seven earn spot on podium at Big Ten Championships

Junior Brianna Fraser scored 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting and junior Eleanna Christinaki had 14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds to help second-seeded Maryland beat third-seeded Nebraska, 66-53 on Saturday night in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.

Team scores: Ohio State 164.5, Penn State 148, Michigan 118, Iowa 90.5, Nebraska 72.5, Wisconsin 67, Minnesota 66.5, IL 62.5, Purdue 59.5, Northwestern 55.5, Rutgers 42.5, Maryland 30.5, IN 10, Michigan State 9.5. McCrystal, Berger and Venz will be joined by Jason Renteria, who placed fifth at 133, CJ Red, who was seventh at 141, and Isaiah White, seventh at 165. He is 21-5 on the season after a 4-2 weekend. 157: Tyler Berger (4-2, fourth). Isaiah White (165) and Eric Schultz (197) each placed seventh at their respective weight classes. In the third-place match, Berger dropped a 6-2 decision to sixth-seeded Andrew Crone of Wisconsin. They have never met in the Big Ten Tournament. The All-American is 22-8 on the year, and has booked his trip to the NCAA Championships with his finish this weekend.

Whitish hit another 3-pointer to cap an 8-0 spurt and pull Nebraska within seven midway through the third quarter, but Christinaki scored six points during a 8-0 run that made it 47-32 going into the fourth and the Terrapins led by double figures the rest of the way.

Venz, the No. 6 seed, defeated fourth-seeded Emery Park of IL 9-4 before dropping the third-place match 7-3 to Michigan's Domenic Abounader. In the consolation semifinal at 133 pounds, fourth-seeded Jason Renteria dropped a 9-8 decision to seventh-seeded Dylan Duncan of IL. 133: Jason Renteria (3-2, fifth). Frese is 11-1 in the Big Ten Tournament, including her 2001-02 season at Minnesota.

Freshman Eric Schultz also finished seventh at 197 for the Huskers and could receive an at-large berth into nationals on Tuesday.
