The Kerala Police on Friday arrested two individuals from Mukkali village in Palakkad district in connection with the murder.

Madhu, who was attacked by the mob on Thursday evening, later succumbed to severe injuries in the head, ribs and chest. Many among the mob took selfies during the assault.

Police said the post mortem would be conducted at the Thrissur Medical College hospital later, only after which the exact cause of the death will be known.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the incident and said stringent action would be taken against the accused.

The Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, which are in the Opposition, staged protests against the killing in Mannarcaud.

"Since the postmortem report indicated attack, eight accused will be charged with murder and other sections of the Indian Penal Code", Inspector General of Police MR Ajith Kumar told Hindustan Times.

Kerala government announced Rs 10 Lakh ex-gratia to the family of the tribal youth who died after being beaten up by a mob in Palakkad's Attappadi on Thursday. At night, he used to steal rice from shops, and a case of theft was pending against him.

"After nabbing him he was forced to walk, carrying a big sack, for at least four kilometres. We are surprised how this group of people managed to go into the forest and beat him up", Chandrika said.

However, state forest minister K Raju denied involvement of any forest official in the crime.

Madhu, who was said to be mentally unsound, was living in a cave in the forest for the past several months, his family said.

A video has gone viral on social media of the incident showing a man tied with a lungi. Attapadi is one of the most impoverished areas of the state that frequently hit headlines over malnutrition deaths of children.
