Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-un's younger sister, was on hand for the ceremonies.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said: "We are stronger than all the forces that want to divide us".

Finally, Yuna Kim - a hero in South Korea following her figure skating gold medal at Vancouver 2010 - lit the Olympic flame to get the Games under way in earnest.

The exchange with Kim however was the highest-level meeting between the United Nations chief and North Korea.

"The Korean government is basically in close consultation with the global community including the United States, when necessary, in accordance with the basic principle that North Korea's participation in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games should not cause controversy related to worldwide sanctions against North Korea", South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman Noh Ku-duk said Tuesday, according to Voice of America. Kim Yo Jong is scheduled to meet with President Moon on Saturday.

It was the 10th time South and North Korea have done so under a unified flag at major sporting events since 2000.

Two impersonators dressed up as US President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un were also swiftly ejected by security staff.

One Twitter user wrote: 'Why did South Korea choose to light the Olympic torch with some sort of flaming robot penis?'

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, representing America's delegation, was in the same observation box at the opening ceremony.

She has appeared prominently and is seen as the most influential woman along with Kim Jong Un's wife, Ri Sol Ju, in a country where family ties mean more than any title or rank.

The Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea yesterday sparked to life in a vivid, colorful ceremony of fire and ice, although the diplomacy was tougher to choreograph in the stadium where leaders from nations that are sworn enemies sat close together. But an official of the South's Unification Ministry signaled that the plane used by the delegation would not be subject to the sanctions. As the head of North Korea's parliament, he became the most powerful North Korean to visit their southern neighbors in 65 years, per Telegraph.

Analysts say the North's decision Kim Yo Jong to the Olympics shows an ambition to break out from diplomatic isolation and pressure by improving relations with the South, which it could use as a bridge for approaching the United States.
