With nods to the country's landmarks and ancient culture as well as its potential to lead the world in future technological innovations, the opening ceremony at Olympic Stadium featured athletes from 91 countries, including a delegation from North Korea that marched into Olympic Stadium with athletes from South Korea.

Arriving on her brother's jet, Kim Yo Jong flew in the South Korea as part of a high-level delegation attending the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Supreme Leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un were not among those present.

"We should not be fooled around by North Korea's intention to prevent South Korea-U.S. military exercises from resuming and to cause a crack in global pressure and sanctions on North Korea", Rep. Choung Tae-ok, spokesman of the party, said in a statement.

Dressed in a long black winter coat and fedora, Kim could be seen at the beginning of the event walking on a red carpet with his wife, Ri Sol Ju, and Kim Yong Nam, the country's ceremonial head of state.

Earlier on Friday, Pence said Moon gave his backing to additional measures the United States is planning to try to curb North Korea's missile and nuclear programmes, speaking after paying tribute at a South Korean memorial.

"We saw tourists from Beijing and Shandong - areas where package tours were resumed albeit with restrictions - booking trips for the Winter Olympics", said Park Yong-hwan, a deputy director at Korea Tourism Organization.

Pence was asked about Thursday's military parade in North Korea overseen by Kim Jong Un.

The sister of Kim Jong Un became the first member of her family to visit South Korea in more than 60 years this week.

But the vice president, per reports from CBS News and the Associated Press, neither interacted with Jong nor stood to recognize the joint North and South Korea team that entered for the ceremony. The last time South Korea hosted the multi-sporting extravaganza was at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
