White House preparing for government shutdown

"Keep in mind that in 2013, the only way I can describe it, was the Obama administration chose to weaponize the shutdown".

For instance, on Friday, just hours before the shutdown began, Mulvaney told conservative radio host Sean Hannity, "I found out for the first time last night that the person who technically shuts the government down is me, which is kind of cool". Democratic senators blocked a bill to extend government funding because of the Trump administration's controversial plan to finish amnesty for Dreamers, undocumented immigrants who were brought to the us when they were children. "We don't want this". DACA doesn't expire until March 5.

They relented in return for Republican assurances that the Senate will soon take up the plight of young immigrant "dreamers" and other contentious issues.

Callers were greeted by a recording of a woman blaming Democrats for holding government funding "hostage" and telling them to send an email to the White House.

Mulvaney said he is running the shutdown very differently now from the way in which the Obama administration ran the previous one in 2013. "So, if you only have 51 votes in the Senate, then you have to have Democrat support to fund the government. So that's the answer to your question", he added. He said about 75 percent of the government would remain open, and he noted that Congress arranged for the military to continue to get paid.

Mulvaney reiterated at the press briefing that the White House does not want a shutdown. "He is actively working to try to get to a deal".

The White House on Friday confirmed that President Donald Trump cancelled his trip to Florida and met Senator Schumer in order to secure a deal to avoid government shutdown.

"It always happens to be the top. We are not going to weaponize it", Mulvaney said Friday. "The President is the leader, and he's got to get everybody in a room and he's got to lead".

The Trump administration recently recorded an anti-Democrat Party voice mail message on a public White House phone, thereby politicizing a communication line meant to serve the people.

But Trump has also stoked considerable confusion in the halls of Congress as the shutdown deadline fast approached.
