Congress meets Saturday in effort to end government shutdown

And even before the Senate had voted on - and failed to pass - the short-term funding bill to keep the government open, much of the West Wing had already emptied out, the press offices sitting dark. Schumer told reporters afterward that progress had been made, but there was no deal.

"There is no reason for this shutdown", Ryan said. Lawmakers have been busy pointing fingers at who's to blame for the impasse.

This is not normal behavior for House Republicans. Shortly before the vote, the House Freedom Caucus said a majority of its members had voted to approve the measure, making passage more certain. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), voted against a spending bill to prevent a government shutdown because it did not include amnesty for at least 3.5 million illegal aliens and their illegal alien parents.

Many hope the shutdown, which comes on the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump's inauguration, will be short-lived.

In a 1995-96 political battle, President Bill Clinton bested House Speaker Newt Gingrich and his band of budget-slashing conservatives, who were determined to use a shutdown to force Clinton to sign onto a balanced budget agreement. Whichever party blinks will have far less leverage in negotiating critical issues over the next two months.

They were given temporary legal status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program started by former President Barack Obama. She already was selling tickets discounted to $10, and anxious about the impact a prolonged shutdown would have on tourism.

Mr Schumer also called on the president and leaders of both parties to resume negotiations today.

Having stated that McConnell has bullied Democrats time and time again by forcing them to "take it or leave it" with legislation, Schumer moved on to highlighting that he attempted to negotiate a deal with the president in the waning hours before the shutdown. "This should be an easily resolved situation, because you have bipartisan support for each of the main pieces of the deal", said Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.).

Those talks were thrown into chaos last week, when Trump rejected a deal floated by bipartisan senators and reportedly questioned why the USA needed immigrants from "s--hole" countries like Africa and Haiti. "You know, 'You've been here 20 years, we're going to kick you out.' That's not right. So it's tough", said Sen. "I will continue working with my colleagues to work towards a solution to properly fund our government". Their bet is that Democrats will find themselves in a politically unstable position and will eventually give in - just as Republicans did when they were routed during the 2013 showdown. "That's why this compromise will be called the Trump Shutdown". This year's theme? "Stay calm, stay together". Or, they can instigate a shut down.

The government begins to shut down.

The US government has shut down after US Senators failed to reach a last-minute deal to fund its operations, divided in a bitter dispute over immigration and border security.

Short however said defiantly that any negotiations over the future of the DACA program would have to continue only after Democratic lawmakers relent and the government is fully funded.

"You have to get everybody in a room", Mr. Trump said in 2013.

Each time a short-term spending bill has come up, more Democrats have voted against it.

"I don't think either side should hold a gun to either head over the immigration issue", Issa said.
