Apple apologizes for battery slowdown in old iPhones

Facing a barrage of criticism after acknowledging the existence of a feature that can reduce the processing power of old iPhones, Apple said Thursday that it would reduce the price of battery replacements to regain customers' trust.

Apple makes it clear in the letter that there's been a big misunderstanding from both customers and the media about the fact that they slow down old iPhone models with damaged or nearly depleted batteries, which may cause unexpected shut downs in cold weather.

Meanwhile, in a letter to customers posted on its website, Apple has issued a public apology for the misunderstanding around older iPhone being slowed down without informing customers.

Since last week's announcement, iPhone owners have filed at least 10 class-action lawsuits against Apple, saying the company's choice to keep quiet about that software led them to buy newer, more expensive iPhones instead of just replacing the batteries.

Apple has apologised to customers for purposely slowing down the performance of older iPhone models, without first asking for their consent. That's only for people with an iPhone 6 or newer model.

"Apple released a statement at the time sating that their goal was to 'deliver the best experience for customers".

The cost of an out-of-warranty of iPhone battery will be SGD38 in Singapore, announced Apple today as it offered an apology for its handling of the issue of flagging batteries on the older phone models.

Last week, we reported that there is something buried in iOS code called "Powerd" which gradually slows down the performance of your phone as the battery ages. We don't know what this new iOS feature will be, but I'd expect battery management software similar to their main competitor; Samsung. "While these changes may go unnoticed, in some cases users may experience longer launch times for apps and other reductions in performance", the statement read. With a newly installed replacement battery, "iPhone performance returns to normal when operated in standard conditions", the company added. We contacted an Apple rep who confirmed local pricing for the battery replacements is S$38, down from the usual S$118.
