Apple says this program will be live till December 2018.

Apple acknowledged that it was purposefully throttling the performance of older iPhones in some cases.

Thune asked if Apple considered making free battery replacements available or if it explored offering rebates for customers who paid full price for replacement batteries.

In a bid to try and stem the backlash from disgruntled users, Apple then announced that it was slashing the price of replacement iPhone batteries.

News of the delays comes from internal Apple documents shared with Apple Stores and Apple authorized service providers.

While Apple did release information about the battery shutdown fix in iOS 10.2.1 past year, it wasn't entirely clear that the power management tweak would also slow down older models of the iPhone.

Just a couple of days after the French government launched an investigation into Apple's practice of throttling iPhones' performance, the US government is now interested in learning more about this matter as well. They could still have it checked, however, but they might want to wait until the panic to have iPhone batteries replaced has died down a bit.

An Apple spokesman did not respond to a request for comment early Wednesday. Add that many manufacturers of Android smartphones has officially stated that an example with Apple and do not take your gadgets don't slow down.

In an letter apologizing for the decision, Apple said it would offer $29 battery replacements for several iPhone models (including the iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, and iPhone 7) instead of the usual $79. Barclays analysts estimated that if 10% of iPhone users eligible for a battery replacement opted for a new battery over a new iPhone, Apple could sell 16 million fewer iPhones this year, potentially costing the company over $10 billion in lost sales.

Apple's reasoning was that by hampering performance, it would improve the long-term health of batteries inside its smartphones.
