Troopers deal with fatal crash in Madison County

At 11:42 a.m., the FHP was notified of another crash, at State Road 206, involving two vehicles and at least one seriously injured person that will be taken by air ambulance.

The roadway was closed for a time as crews dealt with the crash, but FHP reports the interstate is now back open.

Knox was arrested on charges including driving under the influence, battery on a law enforcement officer, leaving the scene of a crash and child neglect.

The accident happened just after 5 a.m. on southbound US 95 at the Snow Mountain exit.

Congestion was compounded later in the morning when a second crash, at the State Road 206 interchange, required all northbound lanes to be shutdown almost 10 miles south of the first wreck.

The crash involves three cars and two semi-trucks.

Michael Vanpelt, 29 of Zephyrhills, was driving a 2016 Dodge westbound in the eastbound lanes of State Road 60 near Peavine Road around 3:45 a.m. when he crashed head-on into a semitruck traveling the other way, troopers said.

Deputies warn that traffic was backed up for miles and drivers need to use caution once the road reopens.

Lambert was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her vehicle spun counterclockwise and came to rest in a ditch on the east side of the highway, the release said.

Last year, 44 people were killed in 41 crashes.
