Prime Minister Modi receives Israel PM Netanyahu at airport

The Prime Minister's Office said that Netanyahu had been expecting to be met by Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, and was surprised to see Modi waiting for him on the ground at Air Force State New Delhi.

Earlier during the opening of the Knesset's (Israeli parliament) winter session last month, Netanyahu said, "In the past year, I have visited all continents besides Antarctica and in January, I will make a reciprocal visit to my dear good friend, Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India".

The three bronze statues at Teen Murti represent the Hyderabad, Jodhpur and Mysore Lancers who were part of the 15 Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade.

The Israeli Prime Minister, who is the second Prime Minister from his country after Ariel Sharon to visit India in the last 25 years, will aim at boosting diplomatic ties with New Delhi.

The Israeli PM will be accompanied by a 130-member delegation from various sectors including cyber, agriculture and defence.

Modi and Netanyahu formally renamed the Teenmurti Chowk as Teenmurti-Haifa Chowk, commemorating the centenary of the historic Battle of Haifa. Netanyahu said before his departure that he will sign several agreements with his Indian counterpart over the course of the trip. "We will sign very many agreements", Netanyahu said in statement.

Israel and India have developed close ties in high-tech and defense cooperation. "We will strengthen the connection between Israel and this important global power".

On Wednesday, PM Modi will accompany Netanyahu to Ahmedabad.

The visiting dignitary, on Monday, will be given a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhawan which will be followed by the wreath laying at the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi.

Netanyahu will also meet President Ram Nath Kovind.

The Israeli prime minister will travel to Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Agra also.

The prime minister's entourage includes the largest-ever delegation of Israeli businesspeople with representatives from the agriculture, water technology, cybersecurity, defense, health, and food industries. Modi and he will also visit the Center of Excellence in Vadrad and inaugurate a Center of Excellence for date palms in Bhuj via video conference.

Carmon said 11-year Moshe Holtzberg will also accompany Netanyahu and participate in a function at the Chabad House in Mumbai.
