J&K: IED defused on national highway

Security forces on Saturday recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway, police said.

An official said that the IED weighing almost five kilograms was planted by the militants in HMT area of Srinagar.

"During the operation, services of dog squad and bomb squad were also pressed into service". The official said the area was cordoned off and traffic was diverted.

Traffic was later restored on the highway.

Local residents said over phone that there was a loud blast, sound of which was heard in the area when BDS defused the IED.

Reports said that Jammu and Kashmir Police, 2 RR of army and Bomb Disposal squad reached the spot and THE explosive was diffused.

Last week, four policemen were killed in an IED explosion in Sopore. Two persons were injured.

In the evening, the Army opened fire on a vehicle near Shalteng. "If it would have been a (land) mine, how a person could have lifted it?" he said.

"We have registered a case in the incident and launched investigations", he added.
