Del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion and Auckland victor, beat Ferrer 6-4, 6-4 to continue his strong form from the end of last season, which included victory in Stockholm and losing the Basel final to Roger Federer.

Del Potro, who sealed the Auckland title in 2009, shone in the key moments and fought off six of the seven break points Ferrer forged in a tense clash, with two games in the second set lasting nearly 10 minutes apiece.

The Argentine served at 46% and he defended his games efficiently, saving 6 out of 7 break points and stealing rival's games 3 times after a poor performance from Ferrer on his second serve.

"I served really well in the second set and I tried to play aggressively".

Bautista Agut, the world No.21, will go on to face Robin Haase in Friday's semi-finals after the Dutchman's defeat of giant-killing German Peter Gojowczyk 6-4 6-4.

"We've played many matches on tour - his forehand is pretty good, serves are good and returns so well, so I must be smart", the world No.12 del Potro said.

Isner's powerful serve wasn't enough to save him in his match with Chung, the victor of last year's ATP Next Generation finals.

Del Potro - who'll head into the final as a red-hot favourite - hoped to lift the trophy once again, as he gears up for a 2018 Australian Open tilt.

Querrey lost 6-4, 6-7 (10), 7-6 (5) to Czech Jiri Vesely, two-time champion Isner lost 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-2 to Hyeon Chung of Korea and Johnson was beaten 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 by fifth-seeded former champion Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain.

"If he has a good day, he is very risky as a lefty, he serves well and volleys".

The second-seeded del Potro will aim for his first Classic title since 2009, while the 29-year-old Bautista Agut will seek his second crown in three years.
