According to Buzzfeed, who reported from the scene of the protest, Ragbir was detained during a routine check-in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and told he would be deported.

A Police Department spokeswoman said that 18 people were arrested, but it was not immediately clear what the charges were. Ragbir is the executive director of the New Sanctuary Coalition of NY and has been nationally recognized for his work. Ragbir, executive director of the New Sanctuary Coalition of NYC, was detailed by ICE authorities during a routine check-in.

Several arrests were made as demonstrators rallied outside a federal building in New York City on Thursday, January 11, in support of Ravi Ragbir, an immigrant rights activist who was reportedly detained by immigration officials that morning.

Ragbir has lived in the United States for more than 26 years.

In 2001, Ragbir was convicted of wire fraud while working as a loan processor for a USA -based mortgage lender, making his green card subject to review despite the fact that his wife is a US citizen and is the father a USA -born daughter.

He described Ragbir as "a dedicated community educator, spokesperson, and advocate for immigrants".

"The detention of both Ravi and Jean is an affront to faith-based communities everywhere", Rev. Chloe Breyer, executive director of the Interfaith Coalition of New York City, said in a statement. "The fact that ICE has taken him as if his spirit, family ties and contributions to the community mean nothing is inhumane". Johnson called for Ragbir's release and a stay of removal.

Activists are encouraging others to call the ICE offices and NY senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand to demand Ragbir's release.

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley also issued a statement after ICE detained Ragbir.

"In each review", the statement continued, "the courts have uniformly held that Mr. Ragbir does not have a legal basis to remain in the U.S". ICE justified its decision and said he will remain in custody pending removal to Trinidad. He has since exhausted his petitions and appeals through the immigration courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals and the U.S. District Court.

Williams is seen in the video and photos in a gray suit and red socks. Mayor Bill de Blasio's spokesman said the mayor has been briefed on the protest, adding, "the area is covered extensively by cameras and we'll be reviewing the footage to get to the bottom of what happened".

Trivedi told India-West that after Ragbir was released from immigration detention in 2008, he was inspired by his experiences while incarcerated to speak out on prison reform and immigrant rights.
