"This snow will be heavy and wet, which will have the potential to cause power outages". Rivers and streams could see locally fast and significant rises in vicinity of any ice jams. "Temperatures will rapidly fall from the 50s and into the 20s by Saturday afternoon, resulting in a flash freeze".

Winter is making a dramatic comeback less than 24 hours after we got a taste of spring in January.

UPDATE: At 10:43 a.m., the National Weather Service issued a dedicated flood warning for the Genesee River in Portageville in Wyoming County.

"There is a lot of ice", he said. When rivers rise or there is an increase in flow due to rainfall and/or melting snow, the ice begins to move. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch are possible.

Glen Gosnell, Washington County's director of public safety, said his office has been monitoring the Mettawee River and Batten Kill, but hadn't heard of any potential problem spots.

Ice jams typically occur when temperatures above freezing cause ice to begin to thaw into big chunks.

"Rain will change to a brief period of freezing rain between 9 a.m. and noon", the weather service said.

The concern is that the ice moves and blocks the river's channel in places, causing water to back up and the river to jump its banks.

"If that happens, we will be out there treating those areas", Russo said.

Mainers should be prepared for a little bit of nearly everything over the next couple of days, which the National Weather Service says will be bring rain, snow, ice jams, rising temperatures, fall temperatures, rising rivers and coastal flooding.

But first, a drenching, spring-style rainstorm is headed into the Berkshires, prompting a flood watch from the National Weather Service for Friday, extending into Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's high temperature is likely to be 39 degrees, 20 degrees cooler than the high in Hartford on Friday.
