The PDP MLA's statement comes a day after he had asked legislators in the J&K Assembly not to express happiness over the killing of militants as they too were "brothers".

"We killed 200 (militants) but 200 more (militants) joined militancy (last year)", he said. The PDP leader, Aijaz Ahmad Mir, represents the Wachi Assembly Constituency in Kashmir's Shopian district.

"We will get nothing out of killings of either civilians or terrorists", he said and added, "all Kashmiris and terrorists who belongs to Kashmir are our brothers". "This is our collective failure".

Aijaz sympathised with the security personnel killed in the state, saying, "We feel sad when our security forces are martyred as well". We should sympathise with the parents of jawans and with the parents of terrorists as well.

Earlier on Wednesday, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti gave a rousing speech in the state Assembly arguing that the violence in Kashmir can not be set right by the Centre alone, calling all stakeholders to come together to set it right through the political process.

Opposition parties as well PDP ally BJP latched onto the statement and slammed Mir for his remarks. If a sitting legislator has said it, it certainly calls for an inquiry. "I request you all to stop politicising their killing and take some appropriate steps to end this violence", said Mir, adding that this house has to end the blame game over killings.

"The PDP MLA further said, "we speak of India and they speak of something else". The PDP is in alliance with the BJP (in Jammu and Kashmir).

While Minister of State for Transport and BJP MLA Sunil Sharma said that no one can describe a slain militant as "martyr". These are questions the BJP needs to answer.

Reacting to Mir's statement, Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that terrorists and separatists are enemies of Kashmir.
