New monthly worldwide Pokemon Go event "Community Day" starts Saturday January 20

The goal of the event is to encourage players to meet up at local parks with other trainers and experience the full benefits of being part of the Pokemon Go community.

Pokemon Go's press release for the event emphasizes going to local parks to find a Surfing Pikachu, so we're a bit curious as to whether the game's developers are using OpenStreetsMap to limit where this Pikachu will appear. Each month, the event will rotate and focus on a different Pokemon for players to catch together.

The reward for your troubles (and social investment) will be a Pokemon that knows an exclusive move - this could give you the edge in a battle, so you'll want to keep a close eye on it (and perhaps don't turn it into candy at the drop of a hat).

Community Day is created to engage the massive worldwide Pokemon Go community and keep them involved in the game by offering special Pokemon for a short period of time.

Niantic's kicking off Pokemon Go's new year with a brand-new monthly event called Community Days. The very first Community Day is just around the corner, too, arriving on January 20th, 2018.

The first Community Day is scheduled for January 20th and the special Pokémon will be Pikachu, which will boast the exclusive event move Surf. This bonuses include increased XP or Stardust, and lure modules will last three hours during it. Players will also get a Double XP bonus during event hours.
