Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher, Van Dijk insists the hefty price tag, which made him the most expensive defender on the planet, does not faze him.

The Reds spent £75 million to sign the Dutch global and he became the most expensive defender in football history.

Some football fans have questioned why the 26-year-old spurned the opportunity to seemingly win a league medal with Pep Guardiola's side in favor of a move to Anfield.

"You can see yourself that the atmosphere at every home game is fantastic".

Earlier this week, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte admitted he was interested in Van Dijk prior to his move to Anfield, while Manchester City were long-stand admirers.

"So the fact that they have got that money and brought in Van Dijk, who I think is going to be a huge success - I have said it from day one, he is the sort of player that they need. I'm just very happy to play for the club".

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has hinted that he may not hand a starting role to Virgil van Dijk for the Premier League clash with Manchester City. "I can't change anything about that", he added.

Signed to reinforce the Reds' back-line, he began repaying that fee at the opposite end of the field by scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 FA Cup third-round victory at home to local rivals Everton last week. "The team's tactics should be as tuned as possible and I haven't made a decision so far [on who starts]".
