KFC Canada Partners with Bitpay, Launches Bitcoin Bucket

The Bitcoin Bucket deal is now only available on the Canadian website, but if you're interested in using some of your hard-earned currency on a tasty meal, you can trade $20 CAD worth of bitcoin at KFC for a bucket of chicken.

KFC Canada says its "Bitcoin Bucket" deal is real.

According to KFC's Canadian website the fast food chain will, for a limited time, offer customers the opportunity to purchase the Bitcoin bucket.

Also the company points out that the trading time of the Bitcoin Bucket is limited. The Bitcoin Bucket can only be purchased from the KFC Canada website for home delivery.

KFC Canada doesn't seem to be holding back with the tongue-in-cheek presentation, particularly through its social channels. Moreover, the price carries a $5 fee.

Given the current state of the Bitcoin network and its underlying scalability issues, it will be hard for any large-scale commercial fast food chain to accept bitcoin as a payment method.

But, in the future, the integration of second-layer solutions could allow restaurants to enable bitcoin payments, if transaction fees can drop below $1.

The cryptocurrency is already accepted by a range of major companies including Microsoft, Expedia.com, Overstock.com, as well as at a number of fast-food franchises globally.

Customers will be able to pay for the fried chicken buckets using BitPay's payment processing service.

While it's possible that the company truly believes in the potential of the currency, an option for users to spend Bitcoin at KFC is probably more of a marketing stunt than it is an act of embracing this fledgling form of payment.

"The consumer's experience begins right when they place the order online, and payments is a critical component of that experience".

While the move is appreciated, such a step will most likely not percolate across the globe at KFC outlets and neither will it be replicated by other major such fast food retailers.
