Earlier, Kerber won her eighth consecutive match of the new season, coming from 3-1 down in the final set to beat qualifier Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-3 to reach the summit clash.

A double-fault midway through the first set cost Barty a crucial break point as Kerber claimed the first set 6-4.

Angelique Kerber claimed her 11th career WTA title when she defeated Ashleigh Barty at the Sydney International on Saturday.

"I am playing wonderful tennis again and feeling just great", quipped the 29-year-old. She will definitely be among the ones to watch at the Australian Open, where two years she won her first Grand Slam title beating Serena Williams in the final.

Kerber and Barty went on service until the seventh game, when the German broke after a loose Barty game when she lost serve to love with a forehand into the net.

"To be honest, I felt like I probably played some of my better tennis this week", said the world number 19.

That script appeared set to continue when Barty was broken with little resistance to go down 1-0 in the second set, but she returned the favour with venom to break Kerber to love. "She's such a competitor and makes you work so hard for each point".

Barty's big first serve helped her but Kerber was the more composed and was not put under pressure when the Australian had the chance.

"But we will head to Melbourne tonight and do what we need to do over the next couple of days to get ready".
