International Olympic Committee calls meeting on North Korea athletes

South Korea is not alone in its concern of how North Korean leader Kim Jong Un might behave when all eyes are on the Games.

He added that North Korea will send a delegation of officials, athletes, cheerleaders and journalists and South Korea will provide necessary services for the delegation.

Ri said he would not discuss North Korea's nuclear weapons program with the South because its nuclear bombs and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) are aimed "thoroughly" at the United States, not at its "brethren" in the South.

The prospects of resolving decades-old tensions on the divided Korean Peninsula remain deeply uncertain.

Earlier on Tuesday, Seoul said it was prepared to lift some sanctions temporarily so North Korean officials could visit the South for the Games.

"If the South Korean authorities really want detente and peace, they should first stop all the military acts they have waged with the US against their brethren", the official Rodong Sinmun wrote.

For his part, added the statement, "President Moon informed Trump about the outcome of discussions between North Korea and South Korea last January 9th and thanked the United States president for his influential leadership to make these conversations possible".

President Donald Trump plans to name other members of the US delegation for the Games, which run from February 9 to 25 in Pyeongchang, as soon as Wednesday.

Trump has been of late more open, on more than one occasion, to having a dialogue with North Korea.

"Hopefully it will lead to success for the world, not just for our country, but for the world". He played down fears of war. "A lot of good talks are going on right now".

Like so many dictatorships, North Korea loves a good show.

Moon has been supportive of the pressure campaign but has long advocated engagement with Pyongyang.

"By providing hanok, a tradition which has been shared by the Korean people, we hope that the North Korean delegation will be presented with a sense of closeness, warmth and affection, and they will be able use the entire hanok village to enable security", said Choi.

However, in the lead-up to the 2014 Asian Games, South Korea said it would follow global norms that stipulate attending countries should pay their own way. The White House said Moon had briefed Trump on the outcomes of the North-South talks Tuesday and "thanked President Trump for his influential leadership in making the talks possible".

The North's reaction to these proposals is not known.

After a day of negotiations, the two sides issued a joint statement which confirmed they had agreed to hold military talks on defusing military tension.

In fact, our government's decision with South Korea to suspend the joint U.S. -ROK (Republic of Korea) military exercises should have been conditioned on North Korea reciprocating by committing not to launch missiles or conduct nuclear tests during the Olympics.

Later in 2000, Kim Dae-jung won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to promote reconciliation with North Korea through his famous "Sunshine Policy".

Meanwhile, a Japanese foreign ministry official questioned the need for including countries as distant as Colombia and Greece.
