The parade was presented as an opportunity for residents across North Texas to celebrate the MLK holiday together - particularly those whose hometowns don't have their own events.

Thursday's press release from the city made no mention of the Abbott controversy, citing only the failure to meet requirements set by Arlington's special events ordinance. "We are moving forward with the cancellation of the parade". Parade organizers also listed the city of Arlington and the Arlington branch of the NAACP in the sponsor page, but spokespeople for the city and the local NAACP said they weren't sponsors.

He said organizers needed to provide $34,000 to cover the costs and that they had been given multiple deadline extensions.

Arlington's traditional Advancing the Dream celebration, hosted by the Arlington Martin Luther King, Jr.

"It is the firm opinion of the Arlington NAACP that the selection of Governor Greg Abbott as Honorary Grand Marshal of any event honoring Dr. King stings with hypocrisy", the group said in a statement. Activities planned for the weekend can be found at. They contend that Abbott's record of supporting a state voter ID law, threatening to withhold funding from sanctuary cities and support for legislative redistricting is antithetical to the legacy of the civil rights leader. The 38th annual parade is Sunday, January 14 and will march between Harbor Drive and Embarcadero.

"We were concerned about what this looked like, the black eye it would give the community to have the NAACP protesting an event named after Martin Luther King on Martin Luther King Day", she said. "It motivates us and inspires us to continue to work for racial equality for all citizens". The parade will start at the San Diego County Admin Building on Harbor Drive at 2 pm.

When the parade ends, there will be a rally at Sundance Square Plaza.
