Flight of the Conchords to tape hour-long special for HBO

It's official: Flight of the Conchords are returning for a new HBO special. The cult favorite signed off the air in 2009 after two seasons and 22 episodes, having earned Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Clement.

New Zealanders Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are scheduled to tape the program during their live, sold-out Flight of the Conchords Sing Flight of the Conchords Tour.

Nine years after their hit comedy series ended, New Zealand's Flight of the Conchords are returning to television.

The special would be a filming of the duo performing new and classic Flight of the Conchords songs at one of the United Kingdom shows. The show was praised by critics and beloved by fans, turning the cult favorites into an worldwide sensation. After that the two came back to HBO in 2007 for the debut season of the series "Flight of the Conchords". McKenzie and Clement took home the Grammy for their album "The Distant Future" in 2008. Clement's film credits include the "Rio" movies (2011, 2014), "Men in Black 3" (2012) and "The BFG" (2016).

HBO confirmed on Friday that the "something" was the comedy special, which will premiere on the network in May.
