In the same apology, Apple outlined their plans to offer $29 battery replacements to "anyone with an iPhone 6 or later" - a significant price drop from the company's previous $79 fee.

For Malaysian iPhone users affected by this, Apple has confirmed that the discounted battery replacement prices will also apply in Malaysia.

"From what I can tell, Apple slows down phones when their battery gets too low, so you can still have a full day's charge".

The tech giant's disclosure echoed a belief that the company purposely slows down its older phones to encourage users to buy newer iPhone models.

Apple apologized for secretly slowing down older iPhones, a move it said was necessary to avoid unexpected shutdowns related to battery fatigue.

With the iOS 11.2 update, it applied the same strategy to its iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

At least five groups seeking class action status, involving consumers in Texas, Illinois, California and NY, have also sued the company in the wake of the slowdown revelation. The offer applies to anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced.

Here in the United Kingdom, it costs £79 to get a battery replacement, so we expect to see the service on offer at a price of about £29.

That's of course the major downside here: Apple's price includes professional installation, whereas if you fry your phone installing the battery yourself, you're pretty much on your own.

On December 20, Apple put out a statement confirming what many users had suspected - but couldn't verify - that iPhones slowed as they aged. However, when the user replaced the battery the performance in his phone became fast again.

The company has stated that it would never deliberately shorten the lifespan of any Apple product, as the "goal has always been to create products that our customers love, and making iPhones last as long as possible is an important part of that." .

However, a leading software development expert says it may be hard to prove that Apple slowed down these phones to increase sales.

'We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down.

"At Apple, our customers' trust means everything to us", the company said Wednesday.

The company also says that there has been a lot of misunderstandings and that it would never maliciously reduce performance in order to compel users to upgrade. After HTC and Motorola, LG and Samsung today said that they also do not indulge in throttling their devices and compromise on performance.
