OH is one of 18 states raising the minimum wage in 2018. The federal minimum wage is still $7.25, where it's been since 2009, but about half of all states have a higher minimum. The organization also says almost 500,000 workers earning slightly more than the minimum wage could also receive boosts in 2018 as employers adjust their pay rates.

Michigan's minimum hourly wage increased 35 cents to $9.25 effective January 1. The training wage remains at $4.25 per hour for new hires age 16 to 19 for the first 90 days of employment. Even though the minimum wage is higher, it's not quite enough to live on in Tompkins County, according to the living wage study released by Alternatives in 2017.

Now, the minimum wage for employers with 25 or fewer employees is $10.50 an hour, while the minimum for employers with 26 or more employees is $11.00 per hour.

That's a 35-cent raise from the current minimum of $8.90 per hour.
