The deaths "are all contained to the train", said Ed Troyer, the Pierce County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

President Trump responded on Twitter by citing the accident as reason for swift passage of his forthcoming infrastructure plan.

The primary change in the OR schedule is that the morning southbound Amtrak Cascades train (Train 503) departure time will change from a 6:00 a.m. southbound departure from Portland to a 9:45 a.m. departure, Monday through Friday.

Daniel Konzelman, who was traveling parallel to the train and heading southbound on Interstate 5, told The Seattle Times he was driving at 60 miles per hour and watched the train pass his vehicle shortly before the crash. "We all tried to stop quickly to avoid running into each other to be honest".

Amtrak officials said the train was the No. 501, which operates between Seattle and Portland. The accident happened about 15 miles east of Olympia, Wash., and service was suspended south of Seattle.

In a statement, Amtrak said it "regrets any inconvenience". Amtrak Cascades trains 504 and 509 are canceled, the Amtrak spokesperson said.

The cause of the derailment has not yet been determined; it is now under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

A train carriage has plummeted on to a motorway in Washington state and there are reports of casualties.

"Today's tragic incident in Pierce County is a serious and ongoing emergency".

Service between the two cities had been restructured and rerouted to allow for "shorter trip times and more reliable schedules", according to a press release issued by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) when the project was approved in 2013. "Trudi and I are holding in our hearts everyone on board, and are praying for the many injured", he said, referring to his wife. "They are our top priority, and I know first responders are doing everything to ensure everyone has the care they need".

Traffic cameras showed a carriage dangling off the bridge onto the highway, blocking the busy road.

The stretch of track carrying services between Portland and Seattle had only just been opened in a ceremony this weekend.
