Elizabeth Vargas will leave ABC News and "20/20" in May after more than 20 years at the network.

The resignation isn't immediate, with Vargas staying on until May, when 20/20 concludes its 40th season. "She continues to be an inspiration for us all".

In a note to colleagues, Vargas says that she is "incredibly lucky to work with the best in the business".

But we were most proud of her courage and grace in telling her own story about her struggle with anxiety and alcoholism.

"She brought awareness to the crisis in Iraq covering Christian refugees escaping ISIS, reported on orphans in Cambodia who were given up for adoption without their parents' knowledge, on gendercide in India, and was at the forefront of the Amanda Knox case from its earliest days", ABC News president James Goldston said in a memo. Her tenure at the network includes stints as co-anchor of World News Tonight, anchor of World News Tonight Sunday, news anchor and frequent co-host on Good Morning America, correspondent for 20/20 and Primetime Thursday, and co-anchor of Primetime Monday.

As we get closer to Elizabeth's final date on the air, we will celebrate her many outstanding accomplishments with a proper send-off. "This is not goodbye - I will be here through May, and can not wait to do more work with all of you in the months ahead". "This is not goodbye - I will be here through May, and can not wait to do more work with all of you in the months ahead". "She is only the second woman ever to serve as coanchor of 20/20", he continued.

It was in 2006 that the New Jersey native made a decision to step down from her role on "World News Tonight".

Vargas also addressed the staff in her own memo, explaining that she wanted to be the one to deliver the news.

"I am an alcoholic", she revealed on Good Morning America.

The news personality had previously spent time in rehab in the fall of 2013 amid her divorce with songwriter Marc Cohen, who had allegedly cheated on her while she was seeking treatment.

'They knew everything already, I would never put them in the position of learning something for the first time on national television, so i had taken care to tell them everything I wrote about in my new book, ' Vargas said of preparing the two for the special. I don't know what I drank, ' Vargas told Sawyer during her appearance on 20/20 last September.
