- A vehicle hit and critically wounded a NY state trooper on an overpass on Long Island Monday afternoon, officials said.

The trooper was out of his auto helping someone on the Long Island Expressway around 2:30 p.m. when he was hit, officials said. He is listed in serious condition.

The incident happened Monday along a unsafe curve on a busy Long Island parkway.

Gallagher suffered a traumatic head injury, but it is believed he survived thanks to nearby paramedics.

The name of the trooper wasn't immediately released. The driver that struck the trooper did stop and is cooperating with investigators, authorities said.

Gallagher, 35, was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where officials say he underwent surgery.
