In neighboring Kunar province, Afghan army killed 10 Taliban militants and detained three others after soldiers fought back a Taliban attack in Ghazi Abad district Friday night, an army source, Mirwais Safi told Xinhua.

Taliban insurgents launched the attacks in the early morning in the Qalai Sang area of the provincial capital Lashkar Gah.

Without providing details, the statement also said that the NDS personnel freed one person from Taliban custody.

Nangarhar has been among the relatively calm provinces in eastern Afghanistan but the anti-government armed militant groups including the ISIS loyalists have been attempting to expand their foothold in this province during the recent years.

Afghan police and troops - beset by a high death toll, desertions and non-existent "ghost soldiers" on the payroll - have been struggling to beat back the insurgents since US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops ended their combat mission in December 2014.

At least 11 policemen were killed when Taliban militants attacked two outposts in Afghanistan's embattled southern Helmand province, an official said on Sunday.

A spokesman for the coalition said he was not immediately able to confirm reports of the attack.
