British diplomat who worked at UK Embassy in Beirut found murdered

The sudden death of a British embassy worker in Lebanon is being investigated by police, government sources have said.

The body of Rebecca Dykes was found on the side of a motorway Saturday, with local sources telling the BBC that the United Kingdom embassy employee had been sexually assaulted and strangled.

Rebecca Dykes, 30, who was working at the Department for International Development was killed after meeting friends and colleagues on Friday night. A statement from the Foreign Office and the family provided no further details.

A British embassy spokesperson confirmed Sunday that a British woman had died and that they were contacting her family.

It is thought she was abducted some time after and killed.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "Following the death of a British woman in Beirut, we are providing support to the family".
