A 22-year-old Virginia woman was mauled to death by her dogs while walking them in the woods near her home, authorities said Friday.

Bethany Lynn Stephens' body was discovered by Goochland deputies about 8:20 p.m. Thursday in a wooded area near the 2200 block of Manakin Road. Goochland County Sheriff James Agnew says her body was being guarded by two very large pit bulls. So her father went out to look for her at the area she frequented.

Agnew said Stevens was a petite 5-foot-1, no match for her burly 100-125 pound dogs.

"I think the investigation needs to be ongoing", she said.

The medical examiner's office said in an initial report that there were defensive wounds on Bethany's hands and arms.

"It shows up she was taken to the ground, lost cognizance, and the dogs at that point mauled her to death", he stated, as per a neighborhood Fox associate.

Friends say Stephens had recently been receiving death threats prior to the incident, which is another reason why they question whether the dogs were to blame.

Authorities said she was found by her father, who was searching for her in an area where she was known to take the dogs out for walks.

"It was a totally grisly mauling", Sheriff Agnew said.

"In my 40 years of law enforcement, I've never seen anything like it", Sheriff Agnew said.

The dogs are being held at Goochland County Animal Control and Agnew said they are working to have the dogs euthanized. Be that as it may, the main awful damage she endured was to her throat and face, Agnew said.

A woman who says she was best friends with the victim says the dogs she knew would never turn on her friend. "I hope I never see anything like it again", said Agnew.

Sheriff's deputies then collected more than 60 pieces of evidence from the scene of Stephens' death, which was covered with blood and shredded pieces of her clothing.
