Toronto gave the Red Wings their third man advantage of the game at 8:06 of the third, and although penalty killers Connor Brown and Dominic Moore almost collaborated on a shorthanded goal for the Leafs - with Moore narrowly missing a chance to convert a solid pass from Brown - Detroit came back down the ice and winger Tomas Tatar netted his 10th goal of the year to make it 3-1 for the home side. The Leafs' road trip couldn't have gone worse, as Toronto failed to produce any points in the standings and now have lost three straight games.

"Once he gets more confident, I think he will be an even better player", Detroit Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin said. It was Toronto's first loss against an Original Six opponent this season after starting the year 7-0-0 against them.

The Toronto Maple Leafs look for a spark of consistency after splitting their last 12 games. In his National Hockey League career, Hyman had 20 goals and 30 assists in 131 games.

Matthews missed five games in early November with a similar upper body injury, but the Leafs responded by going 5-0-0 in those games, scoring 13 goals and conceding just five. Jimmy Howard has given up 68 goals on 727 shots faced and Petr Mrazek has allowed 29 goals on 260 shots.

Marner has struggled to find the back of the net this campaign, scoring just 2 goals in 33 games. Trevor Daley scored the game-winning goal (shorthanded) for Detroit.

Curtis McElhinney was one of the lone bright spots for the Leafs on Friday night, as he put in another solid performance in relief of Frederik Andersen in a back-to-back situation. The Red Wings are 17-35 in their last 52 games playing on 1 days rest, 14-37 in their last 51 vs.
