"All armed IS groups on Syrian territory have been destroyed, and the territory itself has been liberated", General Valery Gerasimov was cited as saying by the Defense Ministry's press service during his annual meeting with foreign military representatives.

"Today in the Syrian Arab Republic there is not one population point or region controlled by the Islamic State", he added.

However, Rudskoy did not rule out that vestigial IS sabotage groups could emerge in the liberated territory.

Meanwhile, U.S. Pentagon spokesperson Army Colonel Rob Manning announced that roughly 2,000 U.S. troops are now operating in Syria, a number the agency had previously disputed.

The United States and France called on Russia Wednesday to deliver the delegation of President Bashar Assad to Syria peace talks in Geneva after discussions on ending the 6-year-old war resumed with no sign of the government attending.

Putin, speaking on a visit to Nizhny Novgorod, said Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to him earlier Wednesday that operations against the IS on both the western and eastern banks of the Euphrates River had been successfully completed.

According to Rudskoy, the use of Russian warplanes, including strategic bombers, in the final stage of the Syrian liberation was "unprecedented". Mentioning the continued existence of isolated hotbeds of resistance, Putin said that on the whole, the Syrian and Russian operation in the area has ended with a complete "routing of the terrorists".
