The choice is not too surprising, given that Pantone and the late pop star's estate designated "Love Symbol #2" as his official color in August.

In a press release issued Thursday morning, Pantone described the hue as a "dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade", that "communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future".

A Twitter user pointed out humans can't actually see ultra violet, but otherwise reaction was fairly positive.

Pantone announces a new colour of the year every December, based on trend-forecasting research from the Pantone Color Institute. Pantone has been selecting a color of the year since 2000.

In an interview with The New York Times, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, called it "the most complex of all colors, because it takes two shades that are seemingly diametrically opposed-blue and red-and brings them together to create something new".

The rich purple is a strong departure from the fresh, grassy color that Pantone chose a year ago called Greenery-a shift that was completely intentional.

Unlike other "Colors of the Year" put out by paint companies, Pantone's color forecasts are used across many industries including fashion, consumer products, graphic and packaging.

If you're looking to use this in your home, Hellander suggests Behr's King's Court as a paint match to Pantone's Ultra Violet.
